PEOPLE DRIBBLED PAST TRUMP

The World Cup against Trumpism

The 2026 World Cup is the biggest stage on the planet this summer.

Donald Trump — FIFA's freshly anointed peace-prize laureate — wants it to be his.

Like all football fans, we just want to enjoy the World Cup – not a Trump propaganda show. That’s why we turned our frustration into something useful.

Here is the plan:

Donate €1 for every goal in the World Cup and help us keep the Trumps of our continent accountable.

All money go to fund The European Correspondent – independent pan-European newspaper.

Read more about them here.

Choose the way you want to support our journalism

Support journalism with 12€ now! It comes with a small present :)

Support journalism with €1 for every goal in the knockout phase of the World Cup.

Support journalism with €1 for every goal of the World Cup.

(Based on past World Cups, we estimate that in the knock-out stage, there will be ~72 goals, and during the whole tournament, ~172 goals will be scored.)

About us

European journalism has not really been done before.

Everything we do, therefore, is an experiment: how can we report from a genuinely European perspective? Which stories are worth your time?

In November 2022, we launched our daily newsletter, covering the most important developments in Europe. From Lisbon to Kyiv, from Tbilisi to Reykjavik – our correspondents summarise the essential news in their countries and recommend links to dive deeper into the events and ideas shaping our continent.

In the long run, consuming European journalism, in addition to local and national media, should become the new norm!

Check our work on our official website (and don’t forget to sign up for our daily newsletter!).

Common questions

  • A pan-European fundraising campaign disguised as a football game. You pledge €1 for every goal in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, then donate the total — once — when the tournament ends. The money goes to the independent newsrooms keeping Europe informed. The dribble-past-Trump game is the cherry on the cake.

  • For now, directly to The European Correspondent. Once new newsrooms join the initiative, it will be split proportionally between them. They are hand-selected, independent and rooted in their communities. In all of their different ways, they hold the Trumps of Europe accountable.

  • No, and no. You pledge now and pay once, after the final — that’s the end of it. No recurring charge, no auto-renew waiting in the small print. Nothing to cancel, because nothing’s running.

  • Every official goal at the tournament counts, own goals included (sorry). The number is a matter of public record, so you can always check our maths.

  • The European Correspondent — a non-profit, pan-European media outlet — together with a growing circle of partner newsrooms across the continent. It began with one annoyed football fan on our team and, pleasingly, got out of hand.

  • We can only care about football if we don’t have to worry about more significant things at the same time. Trumpism stands for a system of unaccountability, corruption and violence. If we can use the stage he wants for himself and turn it into something constructive, we have succeeded.

  • Probably, yes. If you run a media outlet and want to grow your own community and raise funds for your team, get in touch: philippe.kramer@europeancorrespondent.com. The more newsrooms on the pitch, the better this plays.
